Shopee Gift: Shopee Product and Design Challenge

The Shopee Product and Design Challenge was held in December 2020. The objective of the challenge was to improve upon, or design a new feature for the Shopee mobile app.

Problem Statement and Approach

Shopee is one of Singapore's leading e-commerce platforms, occupying 33% of the market share in terms of consumer's preference. However, unlike most other e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Lazada, Shopee lacks a proper gifting platform.


Why Gifting?
1. Well for one, the psychology of why gift giving is so rewarding is because it allows people to connect. In studies where people were asked to give gifts as part of an experiment, the result was that people felt better and happier about their own lives.

2. With many players all vying for increased market share, gifting is expected to be a game changer in determining an app's popularity, exacerbated by COVID-19.

3. Mobile commerce users often prioritise price above all else, since there is no strong enough incentive or personalisation to stick to one app. Thus, while Shopee occupies a good position in the market currently, losing out on this trend could divert consumers away towards competitors offering personalised experiences for users in the future.

4. While several competitors, particularly Amazon and Qoo10, have already begun providing gifting platforms on their service, these are not yet comprehensive, one-stop gifting platforms.

Thus, Shopee still has the opportunity to develop an advanced, integrated gifting platform and act proactively with agility, rather than reactively, when other competitors will enjoy a much greater competitive advantage than they currently do.

Our Solution: Shopee Gift!

Shopee Gift redefines gifting by providing a virtual personalised gifting and receiving experience. It is a one-stop, comprehensive gifting platform to reduce the distance created by COVID-19, allowing people to celebrate fully while adjusting to the limitations!

What does our product include?
We envision Shopee Gift as a new tab in the existing mobile application.
The landing page of Shopee Gift contains the following main features: Gift Bundles, Shopee Vouchers, Create Bundles, Send Vouchers.

Shopee Gift and the 2021 Consumer

1. As we enter the post-covid world, we need to acknowledge that physical distances and virtual celebrations are here to stay for a while.

2. Shopee Gift aims to engage the 2021 local consumer in the post-COVID world by reducing the distance created by the pandemic.

3. It aims to bring people closer through the act of gift-giving and receiving, allowing consumers to reinforce their bonds.

4. Furthermore, through the UI, Shopee Gift aims to provide a personalised shopping experience making it as similar, if not better, to an in-person gift shopping experience as possible.
